How does the schedule work?
There are two different Youth Crew Models:
Residential Crew - A three-week program where members camp for the duration of the program, working 8-huors Monday-Friday and engaging in recreational and educational activities on Saturday and Sunday.
Day Crew - A three-week program where members meet up each weekday, work an 8-hour day, and go home each night.
What does a typical work day look like?
Residential Crew- To combat summer heat, the workday will begin around 7:30am. Each day starts with a stretch & safety circle to prepare you for your project work. You will have two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute break for lunch during the day. Project work ends at 4pm with a debrief, which is a way for you and your crew to come together and reflect about that day. Dinner usually starts around 6:30 pm; you will probably have some downtime before dinner, unless you are assigned to cook. All meals are eaten as a group. Day Crew- The workday will begin at either 7:30 or 8am. Each member should arrive early and be ready to start work at the designated start time. Every day will start with a stretch & safety circle. There are two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch break each day. Every crew works 8 hours, if the day starts at 7:30, it will end at 4pm and if it starts at 8, it will end at 4:30pm.
What kind of paperwork will need to be filled out?
We use an online system called SilkRoad Onboarding to complete paperwork. You should receive an email after you have been accepted with a username and password to access this account. The tasks will include uploading IDs, filling out tax documents, reading over operations manual, etc. We greatly appreciate you finishing this paperwork before your first day! Contact the Youth Program Coordinator, Jackie Meyer, if you have any issues or questions about SilkRoad. There will be paperwork emailed separately from Silkroad, which includes a medical form and Crew Member agreement. These will need to be emailed directly to the Youth Program Coordinator or printed and brought on the first day.
When do I get paid?
Your salary will be deposited in your bank account bi-weekly throughout your term, see 'PAYROLL' tab under During Service for the exact dates each paycheck will be deposited. Your timesheet needs to be submitted every Friday.
Do we work in the rain?
Yes! Crews work in a variety of weather and different ecosystems. You should be prepared for sudden changes in weather, and always have your raingear and layers accessible in your pack. If weather becomes dangerous, work will stop, and your crew leader will instruct you on lightning procedure or other precautions.
What are the benefits of serving with CCNC?
Youth Crew members earn an hourly salary. In addition, members receive professional development opportunities, hands-on experience with environmental and conservation projects, build connections with land management agencies, gain experience working on a team, and meet new people.
Can I contact my friends and family in the field?
Cell phones are allowed, however service can be spotty or non-existent in many of the areas in which we work, so plan accordingly. Let your loved ones know that you may be out of touch during remote projects.
What if there is an emergency in the field?
All of your crew leaders will be equipped with a Garmin InReach device that allows them to check in daily via text message and contact help if needed. We have an On-Call system where a staff member is available by phone 24 hours a day. If you are injured in the field you may be covered by our workers compensation, and your crew leaders will have the appropriate forms to file a claim. If your friends or family have an emergency and need to reach you, they can contact the office during business hours and we will get in contact with your crew leaders as soon as possible.
What are the rules on tobacco use?
The use of tobacco products is prohibited on youth crews.
